Crucial stem cells treatment withheld from Rep. Giffords

Jan. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Earlier today, Eighty-six year old Professor Norman Ende, M.D., of the New Jersey School of Medicine and Dentistry, shared exciting information with a physician attending Representative Gabrielle Giffords concerning brain-repair potentials offered by simple transfusions of cord blood matched only for major blood type (without ANY need for immune suppression, bone marrow ablation, antibiotics or genetic matching). Rep. Giffords is currently in the exact stage of injury (sub-acute) that peer-reviewed studies indicate cord blood stem cells may offer the most effective potentials for restoring (or preserving) the functions of traumatically injured spinal cords or brains.

Correspondence between Dr. Ende and the FDA in 2010 indicate the FDA would prohibit Rep. Giffords from receiving cord blood transfusions should her doctors wish to use this means to maximize her chances of recovery.

Dr. Ende and his brother (deceased) first treated human patients successfully with cord blood in 1965 (for metastasized breast cancer). Their subsequent work in the early seventies using cord blood in patients with Lymphoma led to the first publicized bone marrow engraftments via cord blood in humans. Dr. Ende continues to explore cord blood stem cell potentials for treating ALS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Stroke, Brain Injury, and mass casualty situations due to nuclear attack, terrorism, and nuclear accidents.
