Action for our Planet speaks up for the 60,000 grey seals scheduled to be killed in Nova Scotia

Canada has just launched a grey seal hunt in the maritime province of Nova Scotia. Animal advocacy organisation, Action for our Planet (AFOP) is calling on the Premier and Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia to call off the hunt immediately.

Feb. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Animal advocacy organisation, Action for our Planet (AFOP) is shocked to have discovered the Canadian Department of Fisheries has authorised a seal hunt in Nova Scotia, beginning Thursday the 24th of February. The hunt, intended to kill 60,000 grey seals has been kept largely quiet by the Canadian government and the Canadian press. While the hunt was due to start a week earlier, bad weather conditions have caused a delay.

Upon learning the news of the seal hunt, Action for our Planet’s supporters sent over 200 emails to the Premier and Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia urging them to call off the seal hunt immediately. Action for our Planet’s Founder, Oli Dillon Squire, contests that ‘‘Seal hunting is not only inhumane, it's unprofitable because of a dwindling market. Seal imports are banned throughout Mexico, the United States and the European Union and only a few Asian countries choose to import seal products. Instead of investing in permanent work for sealers, the Canadian government chooses to invest in an unstable and unprofitable seal hunt that only fetches sealers $21 per fur pelt’’.

Action for our Planet is working hard to raise awareness of the hunt and hopes that the Premier and Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia will understand the concerns of Canadians and people worldwide that seal hunting is both cruel and profitless.
