Savannah Teens Participate in World Cultures at Georgia Model United Nations

YMCA Teen Achievers and Savannah Chatham Student Leadership students attended the Georgia Model United Nations in Macon
 
March 3, 2011 - PRLog -- SAVANNAH, GA - Savannah-Chatham County Public School students who are a part of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia Teen Achievers and the Student Leadership Program recently attended the Georgia Model United Nations Assembly (GUNA) held in Macon Feb. 26 – March 1st.

Student ambassadors spent three days with the purpose of representing and learning the role of the United Nations. Local students represented the countries of Lebanon, Nigeria, Philippines, Mexico, Bahamas, and the USA.  Each student ambassador dressed in the attire of their chosen country, had the opportunity to visually represent them with a creative display in the Global Village, and experienced the World Hunger Luncheon. The World Hunger Luncheon challenged the Student Ambassadors to fast all afternoon in support of ending world hunger.

Student ambassadors had the opportunity to give a 30 second introductory speech in the language of their representative country and created their own resolutions to debate. Resolution topics included: funding to create a world hunger relief organization, a resolution calling for the disarming of militia, a resolution to support childhood obesity, and to eliminate illiteracy throughout the world.

The trip was sponsored in part by the YMCA of Coastal Georgia.  Participants included: Mario Morales, 11th Grade, Savannah Arts Academy; Jordan Harper, 12th Grade, Liberty County High School; Tre-Andre Donaldson, 11th Grade, Windsor Forest High School; Reginald Brown, 11th Grade, Liberty County High School; Avonna Kemp, 11th Grade, Savannah High School; Christian Taylor, 11th Grade, Johnson High School; Brittni Swain, 12Th Grade, Windsor Forest High School; Noelia Moscosa, 9th Grade, Windsor Forest High School; Rebekah Waldhauer, 9th Grade, Windsor Forest High School.

About the Teen Achievers Program: The YMCA of Coastal Georgia Teen Achievers is a multi-cultural program that prepares youth for college readiness/career development designed to motivate teens toward high school graduation, college access, and to prepare them for successful entry into the workforce.

About the Student Leadership Program:  The Student Leadership Program is a community initiative made possible by the generous contributions of over 30 area businesses.  It is supported by the work of area volunteers, community advisors and teacher advisors. The program is designed to give students of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School system additional resources to develop the skills necessary to become leaders in their schools, communities, and in their own personal lives.
