May 18, 2011 - PRLog -- A Hudson Valley Hospital Center Nurse has been named Hudson Valley Magazine’s Nurse of the Year.

Bindu Cherian, RN, BSN, who came to this country from India just five years ago, was selected from among 65 nominees for the annual award that salutes nursing excellence.

“I am pleased and very proud that our own Bindu Cherian on 3 South, was chosen  as ‘Nurse of the Year’ at the Hudson Valley Magazine’s 2011 Excellence in Nursing Awards,’’ said John C. Federspiel, President of Hudson Valley Hospital Center. Congratulations are also in order for the nine other nurses on staff who were nominated for this award.’’

Each year hospitals from across the Hudson Valley nominate nurses for the coveted award. The winners are chosen by a committee of medical professionals and editors of the magazine. The award was announced May 11 at a dinner paying tribute to nurses during National Nurses Week.

Bindu Cherian came to Hudson Valley Hospital Center in 2006 from Gems Hospital in Kerala, India. She graduated from All Saints College in Kerala and received her BSN in nursing from Dr. M.V. Shetty Institute of Health Sciences in India.

Bindu has been recognized not only as a compassionate nurse who has received praise from patients, but as a leader who works tirelessly to improve patient care. A member of the Hospital’s Shared Governance Patient Satisfaction Committee, Bindu helped develop the Hospital’s Chaplain program to better meet the spiritual and religious needs of patients and their families.

“Patients continually compliment Bindu for her kindness, exemplary care and dedication,’’ said her supervisor Liza Jones-Kanu, Clinical Nurse Manager, MSN.  “She is never satisfied with mediocrity and always seeks out new and innovative ways to ensure nothing less than nursing excellence. This award is a tremendous accomplishment for Bindu, and a reflection of the quality of our entire nursing staff.’’

Hudson Valley Hospital Center is the only Hospital in the region to hold the coveted Magnet Nursing accreditation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the gold standard in nursing. A key component in Magnet Nursing involves a leadership role that nurses take in developing hospital policy.

In addition to Bindu Cherian, nine other Hudson Valley Hospital Center nurses were nominated for the award and their names appeared in the May issue of the magazine. They were: Ramil Betua, RN, BSN; Lisa Bilyeu, RN, BSN; Lori Brennen; RN; Theresa Bruno, RN, BSN, MA; Salvacion Delacruz, RN, BSN; Treesa Joseph, RN-C, MSN; Suzanne Mateo, RN, MA; Glenda Rivera-Geis, RN, BSN and Kathy Widas, RN, BSN, MPA.
