May 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Global Information Inc. would like to present a new market research report, SSD Insights - The Year of SAS published by Forward Insights.

SanDisk’s announcement last Monday (May 16, 2011) regarding the company’s $327 million acquisition of enterprise SSD (solid state drive) maker Pliant Technology marked a significant departure from SanDisk’s main focus on consumer markets. According to InformationWeek, “SanDisk has been primarily known for its storage cards and flash drives sold at retail stores… Now SanDisk takes on a crowded, yet growing SSD market with established companies like Intel, Seagate, Samsung, and Hitachi.”

This deal is all about access to the flash and flash supply. Looking forward, NAND flash memory is scaling to smaller process nodes. Critical criteria for providing a high-performing and reliable NAND flash memory device will depend on advanced ECC, flash management, innovative algorithms and in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of flash.

Pliant sells enterprise SSDs based on the SAS protocol, as well as multilevel cell (MLC) NAND and higher-end, single-cell (SLC) NAND flash in its enterprise SSDs. SanDisk views the acquisition as “very complimentary” and as “a way to jumpstart [their] way into that market… Adding Pliant Technology’s enterprise SSD business fills a hole in the SanDisk product line,” says Mike Wong, public relations director for SanDisk.

According to Forward Insights, “this acquisition also highlights the looming battle between SSD companies which own the media (flash memory) and independent, non-vertically integrated SSD suppliers such as STEC and Fusion IO and HDD manufacturers such as Seagate and WD/Hitachi GST. Whichever companies win the battle, it is apparent that scale is important and this acquisition is only a harbinger of things to come.”
