Stryker and CareFusion Entry to Vertebroplasty Market Challenge Medtronic Dominance

Subpar growth is expected for the U.S. market for minimally invasive vertebral compression fracture (MIVCF) treatments through 2015

June 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Global Information Inc. is pleased to announce a new market research report, Global Markets for Minimally Invasive Vertebral Compression Fracture Treatments 2011 published by Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence.

A new study on the minimally invasive vertebral compression fracture (MIVCF) treatments market indicates that the global MIVCF market will gain momentum through 2015. The Asia Pacific MIVCF treatments market will grow at approximately 36% annually through the 5-year forecast period. In Japan, vertebral augmentations will comprise more than 97% of total MIVCF treatments.

In contrast, unimpressive gains are forecast for vertebral augmentation and vertebroplasty procedures in the U.S., the world’s largest market for minimally invasive vertebral compression fracture treatments. In the past vertebroplasty treatments have been shrouded by negative publicity, which unfavorably affected vertebral augmentation volumes. Reluctant physicians hesitated in referring patients to vertebroplasty procedures largely because the outcome of a sham procedure versus vertebroplasty cannot be distinguished according to two studies published in late 2009 by the New England Journal of Medicine.

According to Andrew Lee, Analyst at MRG, “the overall health of the [MIVCF] market depends on success in the US. Outside the US, we’ll be seeing a lot of growth in other regions, where the procedures are relatively new. In particular, the Asia Pacific region will exhibit substantial growth through 2015.” Despite the issues, “growth of the elderly segment of the population means that MIVCF treatments overall will still show growth… with Japan’s large elderly population, we expect to see significant growth in the number of [balloon kyphoplasty] procedures,” says Lee.
Research analysts at MRG expect volume recovery for vertebral augmentation will be stronger than for vertebroplasty. Two new players entered the vertebral augmentation market in 2010 with Stryker Interventional Spine debuting its iVAS product and CareFusion’s AVAmax Vertebral Balloon product. Stryker and CareFusion’s entry is poised to challenge Medtronic Spinal & Biologics’ position as market leader in the vertebral augmentation segment.
