New Studies Draw Link to Cockroaches and Asthma in Children

June 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Recent research by Columbia University suggests that childhood asthma may have a link to cockroach infestation.  The study, which was published this May in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, surveyed 240 school children and found that asthma was more common in neighborhoods with high concentrations of roach and rat infestations.  Likewise, children in these neighborhoods were over 50% more likely to have sensitivity to cockroach allergen than children in other neighborhoods.
The research piggybacks on studies from as far back as the 1940s, when cockroach allergies were first identified.  As the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports, somewhere between 23 and 60 percent of children and adults with asthma who live in urban areas also show sensitivity to cockroach allergen.
