Choose the most flattering style for you’re face-shape and body dimensions;
Race meetings are the perfect place to sport the best shaped hat to flatter your face and figure - call into us at MARIANS and we will advise and direct you as to the best hat for you to wear to the Galway Races OR can read on and have fun doing it yourself!

It can be tough to find the perfect Hat; one that suits your head and face shape, some women believe they can’t wear a hat at all. Which actually isn’t the case, everyone can wear a hat; the trick is to search for the right one for your shape and size. Primarily hats are FUN, they add glamour, and are SO Hollywood in the good ol’ days. They really finish off a look or style.

Anyway, I’ve put together some tips, which will help when looking for that prefect hat.
Lets start with your face shape. There are many ways to determine the shape; the simplest way is by outlining your facial reflection in a mirror using a bar of soap or lipstick (something easily removed). From the outline you should have an indication as to what shaped face you have.

Oval face – Hats with large brims look best for this face shape but you can wear most hats as long as they are proportionate to your height. Wear your hat, slightly tilted towards the eye brow, and across the hair or brow line.

Round face – The crown of the hat should not be narrower than the face unless its balanced by a trim, while round crowned hats are best avoided. Broad and asymmetrical brims are best. Wear at an angle to add length to the face.

Square face – Tall or round crowns add length to this shape while asymmetrical and circular brims look best. Simply tilt or slant your hat to soften the square edges.

The Queen wears this Bancock Straw hat to perfection, achieving good balance and giving the illusion of height.

Oblong face – full brim hats are best, avoid high crowns and narrow shapes.  Make sure that your hat brings balance to the shoulder line.

Heart shaped face – Small hats and those with trims and detail, worn high on the head will draw the eye upward. Take care not to choose a heavy or large hat. A ‘good rule of thumb’ for all face shapes is that the crown of the hat should never be narrower than your cheekbones.

A petite woman should steer clear of wide brimmed hats that end outside the shoulder-line, and high crowned styles. Tall woman look great in a flatter crown and wider brim.

The most important factor when wearing a hat is that you are comfortable and confident in the style, and secondly that the one you’ve chosen suits the occasion.

If this all seems too much like hard work, or intimidates you in any way – know that the advisors in MARIANS are experts at choosing the perfect shape, colour, style, and look to show and compliment you, hiding any areas that you are conscious of and flattering the assets you want to display.
Enjoy!
