Aug. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- THE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED “PRIMETIME SISTER CIRCLES” are kicking-off in Philadelphia on Wednesday August 10, 2011 at 6pm at the African American Museum located at 7th and Arch Streets. More than 100 women from around the Philadelphia region are expected to be on hand – signing up to participate in the “Primetime Sister Circles.” In addition to recruiting efforts and information sharing, there will be free health screenings. Every woman who signs up will have their weight, height, blood pressure, waist circumference and BMI measurements taken. These numbers will be used as a baseline reading for the 12-week program and will be re-measured every two weeks to show successes. The African American Museum is one of 7 locations where the “Primetime Sister Circles” will meet and the museum is also a sponsor of the event along with Philadelphia’s Black Women’s Health Alliance (www.pbwha.org). The Primetime Sister Circles are FREE and open to any African American woman aged 40-70 who is interested in improving her own health and, at the same time, reversing the negative health trends that are plaguing the African-American Community. “Obesity is at the core of almost every major health problem we face including diabetes, heart disease, and depression,” says Brenda Shelton-Dunston, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Black Women’s Health Alliance. “It is our hope that the 12-week Primetime Sister Circles will provide women with the tools they need to lead healthier lifestyles in their own lives and also the lives of their families.” The 12-week intervention meets for two hours each week from September until December. The interactive lessons focus on stress management techniques, increased physical activity, and improved nutrition. The classes are lead by specially trained women from the Philadelphia community who are paid a stipend. The Primetime Sister Circles were founded by internationally recognized Dr. Marilyn Gaston and Dr. Gayle Porter of the Gaston & Porter Health Improvement Center in Washington, DC (www.gastonandporter.org ). The esteemed doctors were in Philadelphia in June for the kick-off of the “Creating A Legacy Of Wellness: Mind Body & Spirit” campaign designed to engage city and community leaders so they become concerned about the health of their constituents and begin instituting wellness activities and programs in their arenas. “We have to do something to reverse this negative trend toward unhealthy lifestyles in the African American Community,” says Brenda Shelton-Dunston. “The Primetime Sister Circles is the first in a series of events we have planned at getting Philadelphia’s African American Community healthier.”
The media is invited to the kick-off of Philadelphia’s “Primetime Sister Circles” on Wednesday August 10, 2011 at 6pm at the African American Museum. Other Primetime Sister Circles will be hosted at various locations in the Philadelphia region including First District AME Headquarters, US Dream Academy, and Mother Bethel AME Church.
