Blue Shield of California Foundation awards Tri-City Health Center $20,000

Foundation calls Tri-City Health Center ‘a vital part of California’s safety net’

Sept. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Blue Shield of California Foundation (BSCF) announced a grant award of $20,000 to Tri-City Health Center in general operating support to help provide needed care to uninsured residents of Fremont, Newark and Union City. The grant is part of the Foundation’s efforts aimed at strengthening the statewide network of community clinics and health centers and helping them provide high quality health care to millions of vulnerable Californians.

“Tri-City Health Center is a vital part of California’s safety net,” said Peter Long, Ph.D., president and CEO of BSCF. “The struggling economy and cuts to key public services have made community clinics more important than ever before.”

The grant funding from BSCF will assist several TCHC initiatives for improving the patient experience and internal efficiencies that allow for better access to care, increased satisfaction and improved health. Additionally, the funding will also help TCHC prepare for expected increase in patients due to the number of people that will be eligible for Medi-Cal services under the Health Care Reform.

“TCHC appreciates the generous funding support of BSCF for improving our clinical operations. This grant increases our capacity for delivering health care services from a cost-effective and stable foundation, as we work diligently to limit any increase in medical costs per visit to less than 3% each year” said Ted Shimanuki, TCHC’s Chief Financial Officer.

Blue Shield of California Foundation (www.blueshieldcafoundation.org.) is one of the state’s largest healthcare grant making organizations. The Foundation was formed by Blue Shield of California, a not-for-profit corporation with more than 3.4 million members, 4,800 employees, and 20 offices throughout California.

Tri-City Health Center (TCHC), located in Fremont, California was founded in 1970 to provide family planning services for low-income, minority women. Over the years, TCHC has expanded its scope and now offers high-quality primary medical, dental and behavioral health care services for the entire family. TCHC is a nonprofit, federally qualified health center that serves nearly 20,000 low-income, uninsured and homeless residents living in Alameda County, California.
