Nov. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- The primary benefits of computing in the “cloud” are centred on the freedom from maintaining a costly (and sometimes vulnerable) IT and network overhead. All of the administration and maintenance of the infrastructure is an overhead born by the cloud provider removing the noncore IT function from the recruiter allowing them to spend more time on recruiting. Included with this is the provision of a high availability system and perhaps most important of all, security of data.

Security is often the issue thrown up by opponents of cloud computing and of course it is something that needs careful attention. The most recent security breaches with Sony, Nintendo and others has certainly highlighted this and those systems that are reliant upon user name & password alone for protection deserve a wide berth. However, to counter this, according to UK police forces, some 34,000 laptops are stolen each year (Source: creativematch.co.uk) and on top of that, another 60,000 (mobiles and laptops) are left in taxis each year (Source: Credant Technologies). If your data sits in the cloud, then there’s no chance that losing your hardware is such a major compromise.

The other key benefit gained from using a Software as a Service supplier for your cloud services is that you will most likely be buying into a continuous development programme for the application. This means that instead of having to buy a software upgrade (new licences) every 3 years or so, you will get a steady stream of new releases with added functionality on an ongoing basis – it’s never out of date.

Last but no means least, cloud computing means that you can get at the data from wherever you are -true mobility of labour and it’s not new. Most of us have been using cloud based email for many years so cloud is just a new way of describing something already in place. And for those of us who remember back to the 1970’s the idea of centralised data and computer power accessed via less powerful (in some cases dumb) terminals is old hat. The big difference today is that we have a hugely powerful and dependable internet backbone to manage the communication overhead for us.
