By: AFJMnews By Danzil Monk July 25, 2011 The Dark Side of Charles Darwin (Paperback) He is perhaps one of the best science educators around with an impressive nine academic degrees an amazing history of having over 800 publications in 12 languages and 30 monographs and books including "slaughter of the dissidents" and "Persuaded by the Evidence". In just 14 short chapters author Dr. Jerry Bergman manages to capture the essence of one of, if not the most taboo, aspects of science history. Effectively peeling away the myths that surround and protect the legacy of the single most iconic character in science, Bergman reintroduces us to the man few of us really knew. But in order to accomplish this Bergman has to focus on a side of his subject that few evolutionists, if any, are eager to be exposed to. With over a thousand references to execute his reintroduction of the man so many thought they knew, Jerry Bergman has done a great service to science and history by publishing his latest book, "The Dark Side of Charles Darwin". The importance of another such book is made apparent early on in the introduction: "Darwin was an icon of science during his own lifetime, and his icon status has grown enormously since then. This book provides some needed balance by looking at his dark side, however briefly, and is one of a handful of new books now beginning to reevaluate Darwin's legacy. Criticism of Darwin is rare because it goes "against the grain of conformist academic praise for Charles Darwin" that is all too common in academia, the media, and our public school classrooms. It also goes against the common perception among scientists and academics that Darwin, "one of the greatest of our [science] figures should not be dissected." This is indeed a good explanation as to why this book is needed. Considering the wide spread adoration that is commonly directed towards Charles Darwin today, Bergman wisely assesses the need for a more honest and balanced perspective concerning the man who is considered by many to be the single greatest influence of modern science. Again within the introduction Bergman states: "More than 100 biographies of Darwin have been published in English alone since 1885, all of them favorable, and many very favorable. To understand Darwin and his work, though, the whole story must be told, especially since many people today view him almost as a god. This work attempts to understand Darwin the man and the impact that his work has had on society for good and evil. As he documents, "Darwin was himself in error about lots of things. Actually, in "his seriously flawed book" the Origin of Species, he was in error about many of his ideas, including the means of genetic inheritance and the source of phenotypic variety." The book is divided into four parts, -Darwin and Christianity- Within each of the four divisions are chapters that explode with information about Charles Darwin that has for far too long been ignored by the media and academia. The opening chapter appropriately addresses the condition that existed and the cunning methods that Charles Darwin and his friends used in his day to dethrone creationism and replace it with evolutionary naturalism. Other chapters address the connection between Darwinism and atheism, Darwin's religious views, his often overlooked mental health issues, his faulty scholarship and his long disproven scientific views, his undeniable connection to racism and eugenics, his little addressed unfavorable view of women and his well established guilt of plagiarism. The Book appropriately concludes with an examination of the subject that made Darwin famous, Natural Selection, effectively showing why it was wrong, then and now, to claim it as the mechanism of evolution. The worst nightmare of an activist evolutionist is a highly educated and well informed creationist who has dedicated his life to the defense and propagation of true science, and exposing the false. Jerry Bergman is such a man, and I consider him a gift to the science community and to the church. End
