Follow on Google News | Goya's Third of May Painting Continues to ImpressCoverage of the life and career of Spanish painter Francisco de Goya and the continued interest in his paintings, many centuries later.
By: Tom Gurney Despite the years which have passed since the Spanish uprising which is captured in the Third of May painting, there is still a huge interest in this painting which also has lead to continued reproductions being ordered of it for the many fans of Goya who can be found all around the world, with his career comfortably standing the test of time. There are increasing numbers of companies online who offer Goya reproductions and are taking advantage of this growing interest in someone who created art in a very traditional way, drawing on the passion which can be found in so many of the paintings created by romanticists, with Goya remaining as one of the most significant contributors to it. Goya decided to take on the Spanish uprising against occupying French forces as a topic for his work because he felt great passions about what had been going on and was interested in depicting the horror of war, which most other artists have not normally chosen to do. Picasso's Guernica is another example of where an artist has really tackled the negativities of war and found powerful emotions in art from doing just that. It is pleasing to see Goya still appreciated so much around the world, and so many who continue to follow the romanticist movement.
