Follow on Google News | San Diego Consultant Says That Chasing First Page Of Google May Not Be Your Best Marketing Decision! For the past few years business owners have chased the "First Page of Google" as if it's the Holy Grail of marketing. The problem is that Google continues to make significant changes in the ground rules and the competition is severe for "first page."
By: John Bergman That's a question on the minds of many business owners today. Most indicate that they get at least 8-10 people a week approaching them to get on first page by doing SEO services. When that many salesmen are approaching business owners with the same pitch, you have to wonder whether the market is getting saturated. There can only be so many businesses on the first page. Actually there are 11 or 12 PPC (pay per click) websites, 7 or 8 local business websites and another 6 or 7 websites on what is called organic search. With only 20-30 total spots available, the competition is stiff. With fees ranging from $300-1200 per month to manage this service you have to ask yourself if it is worth the cost. It's important that you have a way of measuring your ROI (return on investment) when paying anyone to manage your website and SEO services. What are the online alternatives for online marketing? * Craigslist and Backpage offer an alternative to chasing first page and both are free to advertise on. * Social media such as Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, Lindedln, YouTube and others are also free and offer less competition in most cases. All of these services require that you use SEO techniques, but the competition is so much less and the ROI can be much better. The best alternative with the highest potential! The best approach to increasing your business with effective marketing is to market to your current and past clients. Oddly enough, most business owners totally ignore this. So do most internet professionals who want to push the idea of "First Page of Google" because that's how they make their living. Most, if not all, business owners have a client data base which contains their clients name and eMail address. The sad thing is that many of them aren't doing anything with it. Your current and past clients already know you and trust you. By establishing an eMail marketing system you have a chance to offer special discounts, new products or services, etc. If you aren't already doing this, you should set up a system right now. If you don't have a data base with your clients eMail address you should begin right away to put one together. There are many ways to do this. Start by asking every customer for their email each time you see them. Explain that it isn't intended to spam them, but to make them aware of specials or discounts that will only be available to your customers. If you have a website, make sure that you have a method of collecting eMail addresses and names from everyone who visits your website. You do this by offering something of value for it. This could be a special report, a coupon, etc. Large businesses learned this secret years ago. What's the best answe in today's environment? The place to begin is to evaluate your marketing strategy and determine what's working and what's not. You have to be able to measure the results you're getting with what you're getting. Are you getting full value? Are you spending money with systems that don't work? Are you chasing "First Page of Google?"
