The word barbecue comes from the word barbacoa, a Spanish word meaning a frame to dry meat or to sleep on. The word was first used in the US in 1697, however, it wasn’t until the cattle drives of the 1800s that barbecued meat became more popular. Cowboys were fed tough cuts of meat that needed to be tenderized by hours of slow cooking. Sauces helped the process and new sauces were developed all the time. “We are excited about celebrating National Barbecue Month in Flagler County, and we feel it’s a great way to give back to our customers for their patronage throughout the year,” said co-owner of Woody’s Bar-B-Q, Joe Rizzo. “All month long they will be able to win free barbecue and other great prizes,” he added. In addition to discounts throughout the month, Woody’s Bar-B-Q is giving away free barbecue entrees all month long. Customers can visit Woody’s on Facebook and Twitter (@WoodysBBQ) Originally opened by brothers’ Matt and Josh Crews in 1998, Woody’s Bar-B-Q was meant for the ultimate barbeque experience. In the spring of 2000, Josh sold his portion of Woody’s restaurant to Joe Rizzo, a high school friend of both brothers. Trained in the fine art of low and slow smoking, Crews and Rizzo have spent most of their adult life creating and serving the world’s best barbeque.
