Follow on Google News | Gomez nets best finish of the season at The BullringJonathon Gomez, driver of the #22 Century Boatland/Living Like a Pirate Chevrolet in the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour netted his best finish of the season to date on Saturday night.
By: Derrick Shannon Luck, or lack there of, could describe Gomez' season to date and a strong performance at The Bullring was needed to turn his season around. And while he still has an outside shot at competing for the championship, the finish this past Saturday gives him not only optimism but a strong desire to compete going forward. Gomez qualified his #22 Century Boatland Chevrolet third quick but would start eighth on the grid after an 11-car invert was imposed. The invert did little to slow Gomez down as he was up to second place by lap 30. He cooled his tires during the middle portion of the race dropping back to fifth in the running order but picked up the pace past halfway. By lap 90 he had made his way back to third then passed four-time series champion Jim Pettit II for second place and cut Thorn's lead to just five car lengths at the conclusion 121-laps. "The car was really fast and even though we had some 'bad luck' in practice (carburetor issue) we qualified up front and were really good in the race," Gomez said. "Thorn (race winner Derek Thorn) was fast late but I started to catch him in the closing laps. I probably needed another caution and a few more laps and maybe I could have had something for him but finishing second was really important to the team and I am thrilled." In six starts in the SRL at The Bullring, Gomez has notched four top three finishes with two 2nd place and two 3rd place performances. "This was certainly a finish the team needed," Gomez offered. "The team has worked so hard this year but have had little to show for it." Gomez has 19 career starts in the SRL where he has scored three wins, one pole award with 13 top five finishes and 14 finishes in the top 10. He is the 2010 SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour champion. Gomez Motorsports is owned by John Gomez, a successful farmer and businessman based in Idaho. The team is lead by crew chief Ron Copeland and supported by Craig Raudman, Blaine Bergem, Derek Copeland, Kyle Cattanach, Adam Wyse, and Mike Mulder. Gomez is contesting the full NASCAR K&N Pro Series schedule and most recently competed in the event at Stockton (CA) 99 Speedway two weeks ago scoring his first top ten of the season coming home in the sixth position. The result moved Gomez up to the eighth spot in the standings just 26-points out of fifth place. His next NKNPS race is May 19th at Iowa Speedway this weekend then it is off the Brainerd, MN for a road course event then back to The Bullring June 2.
