Follow on Google News | Author Joan Kornblatt Returns from Haiti After Distributing Books to KidsSavannah author Joan Kornblatt just returned from her 11th trip to Haiti to distribute a book to children on the island of LaGonave to educate them on the colors around them.
I See Colors, a book for the kids of Haiti, was written in response to the young children who were unable to respond to simple gifts of crayons and paper just a year ago. Many of them have never seen a picture book and most do not have a single book of any kind in their homes. They are considered “pictorially illiterate”. “This was my best trip yet! Working with the kids and handing out the books was incredible! They were so thrilled,” said Joan. I See Colors illustrates extraordinary colors children see everyday on the island of LaGonave, and is filled with photos of food, flowers and animals written in the language of Kreyol and English. Joan was also able to present several copies of her book to the Mayor of Anse-à-Galets, which will be used in the classroom as a teaching tool for English as a second language. Proceeds from the book help provide lunch and the ongoing nutritional needs of children in four schools on the island of LaGonave. “Our goal is to provide lunches for the children on a daily basis, in a place where lunch is something that may only happen twice per week,” said Joan. Joan will be doing a book signing at The Unforgettable Bakery on Tuesday, June 26th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, at 238 Eisenhower across from Toys ‘R Us.
