Alpha Kappa Alpha To Host Health Village at Convention- Star Jones Will Provide Heart Health Info

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will erect a Health Village where members can learn about wellness and disease prevention. The Health Village will be in place during the Sorority’s 65th International Conference from July 22-26 in the Moscone Center.

Star Jones, health agencies to focus on heart health, cancer, diabetes, environment, kidney disease

“It Takes a Village to Be Healthy.”

That is the rallying cry of a Health Village that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has erected as a gathering place for members to learn about wellness and disease prevention. Members will also acquire tools, information and resources to live healthy lives.  The Health Village will be in place during the Sorority’s 65th International Conference from July 22-26 in the Moscone Center.  

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s International President Carolyn House Stewart hailed the Health Village as “a haven founded in love because at its foundation is Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission to keep women healthy.”  She added that “under the roof of this village is a wealth of information and life-saving resources.”

Among the high-profile healthcare advocates who will gather in the “Village” to drive home the message of heart health is Star Jones, attorney, former prosecutor, television personality, best-selling author/lecturer and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.  As spokesperson for the American Heart Association, Jones will share her passion on Monday, July 23 at Noon.  The Sorority has a partnership with the American Heart Association.

The Sorority will join with healthcare partners the American Cancer Society, the American Kidney Fund, the American Diabetes Association and the US Environmental Protection Agency to provide a resource hub for information about diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, asthma and other environmental-related diseases.

In addition:
•chefs will share tips on how to take out fatty ingredients in recipes and make dishes that are healthy.

•fitness trainers will lead workouts and provide techniques on how to develop and maximize an exercise regime

•the National Marrow Donor Program will have an informational hub to acquaint members about
how to register and become a transplant candidate

•The American Kidney Fund will conduct screenings for kidney disease

•a chair massage will provide stress relief

Following is a schedule for the Health Village:


SUNDAY, JULY 22, 2012
12 Noon – “Be the Match” is the donor registry operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). The organization has been helping patients receive the transplants they need for more than 25 years and the program will provide info on how members can partner and make an impact on African-American communities nationwide.  

1:00 PM - The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will focus on Green Living and how best to implement sustainable practices in your home and your office.

MONDAY, July 23, 2012  
12 Noon – “Meet Star” - Star Jones will share her passion for heart health

1:00 PM - The American Cancer Society and Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. are teaming up to make sure that we all live healthier lives and celebrate more birthdays!  

2:00 PM – Live EMPOWERED The American Diabetes Association presents ways to be “Fit and Faithful in Body and Soul.”

2:30 PM – Representing the American Kidney Fund will be Personal Chef, Loan Co who will provide simple, inexpensive ways to refresh your appetite

TUESDAY, July 24, 2012
12 Noon – The American Heart Association presents Chef Berlin Lillard with a heart healthy cooking demonstration.

1:00 PM  The American Cancer Society and Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. are teaming up to celebrate survivorship and sisterhood. Survivor Trista Hargrove will share strategies on to fight back and advocate for health policies in the community.  

2:00 PM - Fitness Trainer: Chris Bettencourt from the American Kidney Fund will provide new fitness techniques and exercise tips.

2:30 PM -  The American Kidney Fund presents Chef Dorothy Whittenburg who will provide a twist to the ordinary salad and “serve up” new ways to have your greens!  

WEDNESDAY, July 25, 2012
12:00 PM- The American Kidney Fund presents Coco O’Donnell, a clean living coach.

12:30 – Fitness Trainer: Aileen Nazarene Medina will provide assistance in Health & Wellness Goals.

1:00 PM - AKA and American Cancer Society present a game of trivia whose goal is to celebrate survivorship and sisterhood.

2:00 PM –  The American Diabetes Association presents Live EMPOWERED with “Soul Flava in the Kitchen,”  who will instruct attendees on cooking for diabetics.
