Sept. 3, 2012 - PRLog -- With the establishment of various scholarship programs, the Foundation puts education in the spotlight.

The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation founded in memory of Aristotle Onassis’ son Alexander S. Onassis, who was tragically killed in an airplane accident, has since its inception, been involved in supporting culture, education, the environment, health and social solidarity. As part of its support for education, the Foundation  offers scholarship programs for both doctorate and postgraduate programs. The programmes are either  for Hellenes for their studies in Greece or  abroad  or for foreigners. These are both announced on an annual basis.

Firstly, the Program of Scholarships for Hellenes was established in 1978. Initially, the program awarded scholarships to Greek University graduates for postgraduate studies or doctoral studies abroad. In 1998, the program began to award scholarships for doctoral studies in Greece and in 2001 scholarships began to be awarded for post-graduate studies in Greece. More than 130 Scholarships for Hellenes are awarded each and every year in Greece and abroad in all fields of study. Scholarships for Hellenes can also be awarded to artists who wish to improve their technique or abilities in schools, conservatories, workshops and academies abroad.
Furthermore, the Foundation also awards grants to the children of its employees, be they past or present, in recognition of the services that have been performed within the course of their duties.
Scholars are selected by the Foundations’ Board of Directors who take into consideration all recommendations made by students’ committees of academic advisors. The Committees themselves are made up of University Professors, Academicians, scientists as well as renowned artists.

Secondly, in 1995, an annual program for grants and scholarships for research, study and artistic endeavour within Greece intended exclusively for non-Greeks was established. The program also accepts Greek Diaspora applicants (on a case by case basis) as well as  second generation Greeks, and Greeks who permanently live abroad and have been studying or have been employed in foreign Universities for over 10 or 15 years, depending on the type of scholarship that is under consideration.
The program also includes Cypriot citizens, who have studied and/or live outside Greece who are National Academy members, University professors, doctorate holders and post-doctorate researchers, as well as distinguished artists.
