Gray Panthers March and Rally to Oppose Attacks on Medicare

Gray Panthers will be holding a "Dont Kill Medicare" March and Rally in Washington, D.C. on October 15, 2012. Gray Panthers will express concerns about "nails in the coffin" ideas in various Medicare reform proposals.

Oct. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Who will be carrying a coffin, accompanied by the grim reaper, down Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. on October 15th?  It’s not early Halloween revelers, but members of the Gray Panthers, an intergenerational social justice organization. They plan to march to the Hubert H. Humphrey Building for a “Don’t Kill Medicare” rally at 1 p.m.

The Hubert H. Humphrey Building is the Washington DC home of The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that administers Medicare. Gray Panthers are concerned that various plans to “reform” Medicare floating around Washington DC, such as privatizing the program with vouchers, raising the age of eligibility, or cutting benefits as part of a “grand bargain” after the election, could become “nails in the coffin” for a program that is greatly valued by a high percentage of the American people.

Judy Lear, Gray Panthers Chairperson, said “The majority of the public, from all political affiliations, oppose cutting Medicare according to recent polls by the Kaiser Family Foundation.  Gray Panthers are fighting to preserve and strengthen Medicare to provide greater access to health care for all Americans”.

At the rally, Gray Panthers will release their new document “Fight Truth Decay! Know the Facts about Medicare”. The document challenges common lies and provides factual information about Medicare.
