By: Gray Panthers The recipients of the 2013 Social Justice Awards are: • Paul Nathanson, as Executive Director of National Senior Citizens Law Center, works to protect the rights and ensure the health and economic security of older adults with limited income and resources. Paul’s close relationship with Gray Panthers founder Maggie Kuhn helped to shape his lifelong career spanning over four decades, as a tireless leader in the aging field. Paul also served as president of the American Society on Aging and was a founder of the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging. • Max Richtman is the President and C.E.O of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. As a 16 year veteran of Capital Hill who served as staff director on the Senate Special Committee on Aging, his legislative experience and efforts helped develop legislation to establish a Consumer Price Index [for the] Elderly (CPIE) which if adopted, would lead to a more accurate cost of living adjustment for Social Security beneficiaries. • The Honorable Jan Schakowsky was elected in 1998 as U.S. Representative Illinois’ 9th district. Rep. Schakowsky has been a leader on a wide array of progressive issues in Congress and has been a lifelong consumer advocate and a champion for the middle class. Rep. Schakowsky’s played a leadership role in passing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and continues to influence important legislative issues such as woman rights, favors marriage equality and comprehensive immigration reform.
