This report from the College of Mental Health Counseling warns against an unhealthy self-destructive mentality leading to an increasingly armed population and police presence.

STOP THE TRAGEDY OF GUN VIOLENCE
Dec. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- In the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, the National Rifle Association (NRS) has officially recommended an increase in security in public schools. The NRA argument is that “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

Following Sandy Hook, four firefighters in upstate New York were shot and two were killed when they answered a call to extinguish fires set by the shooter. Using NRA logic, security should be increased for fire departments, then childcare centers, shopping malls, and ultimately every street corner.  At this rate a police state will emerge.

Mass murders in the US are committed by mentally disturbed people. The Columbine school in Littleton, Colorado, had armed security and did not stop the two shooters.

The very thing the NRA and right-to-bear-arms supporters fear most, will come to pass: a government armed and poised to oppress the people. This is a formula for self-destruction when combined with a well-armed population.

The spiral toward the internal self-destruction of the US is inevitable. Unless mental health services improve to help those who are deeply troubled, there will still be mentally ill people added to increasing gun violence. This is a formula for continuing tragedy.

The College suggests a simple two-part remedy: 1) decrease gun possession and 2) increase mental health services.
