Progressive Chevrolet Collision Center Goes Green With PPG Envirobase® High Performance

MASSILLON, Ohio – March 12, 2013 – Progressive Chevrolet Collision Center has chosen PPG’s Envirobase® High Performance waterborne basecoat for its collision repair center. The switch to an environmentally friendly paint system puts Progressive Chevrolet on the cutting edge of green technology.

“As a business leader in the community, we understand our responsibilities and have to set a high standard for our practices. We knew this was the right thing to do,” said John Dunn, General Manager. “Our use of waterborne basecoat for refinishing our customers’ vehicles will significantly reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere. This move will further help us do our part to improve the quality of our air and contribute to an overall healthier work environment.”

VOCs are chemical compounds commonly used in paint coatings and cleaning products. When released into the atmosphere they help create ozone and smog. When compared to a conventional solventborne basecoat, PPG Envirobase® High Performance waterborne basecoat can reduce VOC emissions by up to 80%. Waterborne coatings are mandatory in California and Canada. They are not yet required in Ohio, so the collision center’s move places it on the cutting edge of green awareness.

Waterborne basecoat is the latest coatings technology that’s typically used by manufacturers to create the original color on today’s vehicles. According to PPG, the introduction of its waterborne color toners for use in collision centers provides the enhanced ability to match a vehicle’s original finish.

“This is a major technological advancement we’ve invested in,” says Dennis Nottingham, the body shop manager at Progressive Chevrolet. “By using water-based coatings, we’re part of the solution, not part of the problem. Plus, while the paint is better ecologically, we wouldn’t compromise on quality and the Envirobase High Performance system proved outstanding for ease of application and color-matching.
