New Organisation Seeks Allies

A new community support service is launching in Cornwall and welcoming applications from people who would like to join its team.

ALLY® is a new business and community interest company offering support for people in the community who are experiencing the loss of their pet or animal.

The service will be delivered by a team of ALLY® Supporters, who have successfully completed the ALLY® training course.

Applications to complete the course and register as an ALLY® Supporter are now welcome and interest is anticipated from staff or volunteers at community health or social agencies, veterinary practices, animal establishments or individuals who have experience in care-related professions.

Founder of ALLY®, Ali Samuels, explains:
‘The loss of a beloved pet can be devastating and the consequences of this loss, if not fully acknowledged, may affect one’s health and wellbeing. Our aim is to support people at this difficult time and focus on what they need to prepare and adjust to the loss of their pet. This may include home visits and some telephone contact.’

Ali continues, “Those who are experiencing the loss of their pet or animal will be offered help by an ALLY® Supporter. The ALLY® Supporter may work/volunteer within a veterinary group or animal establishment, or from within a community agency supporting people who are isolated and vulnerable.”

Ali added, “By providing this much needed service, and creating a unique alliance between these groups and agencies, a stronger partnership will be forged with the primary health care teams. This will hopefully prevent people from ‘falling through the net’, compromising their physical and mental health.’’

DuchyVets in Redruth, Hayle and Penryn, and Mounts Bay Veterinary Practice in Penzance are already piloting the scheme and looking forward to referring people in need.

Sarah Wyatt, Veterinary Nurse and Director of Duchy Vets in Redruth, Hayle and Penryn said:
“Our clients and their pets are like members of our family and the loss of a pet effects people deeply.  It is such a difficult time and important for us that we are always here for our clients. We expect that many people will apply to become a ALLY® Supporter and we are looking forward to having a trained Supporter within our surgery.

The brand new course is accredited by the OCNSWR (Open College Network South West Region) and full funding for the training is available for successful applicants from a Big Lottery Awards for All Grant which was awarded to ALLY® in 2012.

The first course will commence on Thursdays throughout May and June 2013 with a second course in Sept and Oct 2013.

Please contact Ali if you are interested in a place on one of the unique courses as soon as possible via contact details which can be found on the website at  http://www.allyforall.co.uk

Further info: Ali Samuels was motivated to set up ALLY® as a result of her experience as a Registered General Nurse and her personal losses, which gave her the insight to recognise the parallels between her role as a nurse and what could be provided for pet/animal owners - a unique community resource to fully acknowledge pet loss.

This service will launch in Cornwall and forge invaluable links with community agencies and will hopefully prevent people from ‘falling through the net’ and compromising their physical and mental health.

The demand for this service has been demonstrated by a YouGov national survey. Outset Cornwall has supported the startup of the business.
