By: IDEC The 2013 winner is Illustrated Codes for Designers: Residential by Katherine Ankerson, Kansas State University Department of Interior Architecture and Product Design. Based on the International Code Council’s 2009 International Building Code, this publication is an interactive DVD published by Fairchild Books, an imprint of Bloomsbury, in 2012. When evaluating the award nomination, the committee was impressed with the inclusiveness and organization of this text. They felt this DVD-based book is a trendsetter in interior design education and the interactive nature will be conducive to students learning. One reviewer commented that learning about codes is typically presented in a dry format that can be difficult to read but this text “is a well thought out approach to comprehensive 'active learning'.” "Fairchild Books is thrilled to receive the IDEC Book Award for Katherine Ankerson's 'Illustrated Codes for Designers: Residential.' We are particularly pleased that the judges have highlighted that the DVD's interactive nature will have strong student appeal.” adds Kathryn Earle, Head of Visual Arts Publishing, Bloomsbury. “We will be developing the Fairchild Books digital program, and we are very much looking forward to working with IDEC and its members to enhance the educational experience in Interior Design.” Past recipients of this award include History of Furniture: A Global View authored by Mark Hinchman, University of Nebraska - Lincoln and published by Fairchild Books in 2011 and Diversity in Design: Perspectives from the Non-Western World authored by Vibhavari Jani, Kansas State University Department of Interior Architecture and Product Design and published by Fairchild Books, in 2012.
