Article: The Invention of Electricity...

June 5, 2013 - PRLog -- In a world that has reached such an absolute progress on the technology level, the invention of electricity seems so minor and taken for granted. Electricity as we know it today was invented due to the hard work of several scientists, some of which are Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin. Since the 1600s, electricity was in continuous progress and still is nowadays, for we reached a time when electricity is generated by windmills, solar systems, and nuclear systems. But like everything else, there is definitely a difference between electricity in the developed countries and the developing and underdeveloped ones.

Electricity was originally produced by the movement of a loop wire or disc of copper between the poles of a magnet. It is most often generated at a power station by electromechanical generators, primarily driven by heat engines fueled by chemical combustion or nuclear fission. Talking now about the developed countries vs. the developing ones, we can realize that the ways of producing electricity differ immensely between the two poles. While the developed countries use the most advanced ways to protect the environment and provide 24/7 electricity for their citizens, the developing side of the world doesn’t have enough technologies and still depends on the primitive tools that give off greenhouse emissions. Due to this fact, there is not one environment in the developed countries that is saved from harm. Not only that, but also the governments of such states make personal revenues from the fuel on the account of the people’s wellbeing.

Going back to the countries that actually care for their citizens’ health, the European Union created the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) which works on combating climate change and reducing industrial greenhouse effects. It covers more than 11,000 power stations and industrial plants in 31 countries, as well as airlines. The EU ETS has put a price on carbon and shown that it is possible to trade in greenhouse gas emissions. Every country included in this system has a given amount of carbon that it can use. For any number beyond the originally given one, this country is obliged to pay a certain amount of money used to fight against the effects of the production of electricity.

Now, after all the development we have reached nowadays, is it acceptable that some countries still use the primitive ways to generate electricity without taking into consideration its effects on the environment and the citizens? Is it usual that while some countries such as Britain have cylinders that generate electricity every second or two, other countries are busy developing far less important issues and leaving such topics on standby? People said that the world was to end in 2012 and we survived. But if we continue this way, we won’t even be able to live to tell the tale!
End
