The behavior of Teenagers ....

June 10, 2013 - PRLog -- "Knowledge of adolescent circadian rhythms could promote better family relationships if parents understood that sleeping late on weekends is part of their children's in-born cycle and not 'lazy' or antisocial behavior." Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological human development generally occurring during the period from puberty to legal adulthood. Many problems arise during this period between teenagers and their parents, friends, teachers, and society as a whole. Mainly, this is because part of being a teen is developing one’s own identity, separate from one’s parents. So why do teenagers fight with basically every other human being alive?

From covering walls with posters to attitudes towards sex and partying, the problems are many and the conflicts vary. It is normal for teenagers and parents to fight in this stage; the “kid” is growing up, and the parents aren’t ready to adjust to that idea just yet. As adolescents start making some changing in their lives and selves, parents just don’t understand why their small babies don’t like their parents’ “kiddy” choices anymore. Teens get angry because they feel that parents do not respect them and aren’t giving them enough space to do what they like, and parents feel angry because they aren’t used to not being in control or disagree with the teens’ decisions. For example, teens find it normal to hang at the mall every day after school, while parents would want their children to study and play a sport.

Another major problem and rather a characteristic of teenagers is laziness. By definition, laziness is a disinclination to activity or exertion despite having the ability to do so. We often find teenagers not doing anything productive, but rather sleeping or watching television, and nowadays, chatting with their friends through social networks. A 1931 survey found that high school students were more likely to attribute their failing performance to laziness. However, a more recent one has showed that current high school start times contribute to sleep deprivation among adolescents. Consistent with a delay in circadian sleep phase, students performed better later in the day than in the early morning. Thus, the lack of sleep that the students confront during school days is the main reason of laziness. Another recent study also showed that laziness is a physiological matter in teenagers. During this transitional stage, the body releases enzymes which “suck the energy” right out of adolescents, leaving them feeling lazy, and rather unable to perform any task.
No matter what the studies prove or show, problems between teenagers and the rest of the world will never cease to exist. They are young kids exploring themselves and the wonders of the world, trying as hard as they can to fit in this life in their own and personal way. Parents might not be able to understand that since they will always have the parents’ instinct of protecting their children no matter how old they are; however, we must at least try to understand the phase that these “no longer kids” are passing through. In the end, we have all been in their shoe once, and we all know what it means to be a teen!
