At 41, New Bedford Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Standout Has Had A Year Of Gold Medal Victories

WAREHAM, Mass. - Sept. 3, 2013 - PRLog -- John Murphy, 41, a New Bedford, MA resident and competition team captain at Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness, recently finished his best year ever of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition by capping off a string of victories with a gold medal in the Absolute Division of the 2013 IBJJF Boston Summer International Open.

The IBJJF, or International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, is the governing organization for the top level of BJJ tournaments worldwide, including the Pan Ams and World Championships. First made famous as a self-defense martial art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a form of grappling, similar to wrestling and Judo, which favors leverage and technique instead of using strikes or physical power. Men, women and children around the world now practice it for sport, self-defense, and personal development.

The Absolute is an open weight class division, which according to John made the latest victory even more satisfying since he had to defeat an opponent 75 lbs. heavier in the first round.

Along with the latest win, in the past year John has also won gold medals in Purple Belt Divisions of the 2012 IBJJF Boston Open, 2013 Boston Winter Open, 2013 New York Open, and the 2012 Pan Ams.

During that time John has also won gold medals and Expert Division Championship Belts in large regional competitions, including the North American Grappling Association’s Northeast Championships and Grappler’s Quest Boston.
