AME Zion Church sponsors Community Walk to Stop Diabetes, Greenville AL

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Sept. 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Greenville, AL – 26 million Americans are living with diabetes.  The Christian Education Department of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is partnering with the American Diabetes Association to host a Community Walk to Stop Diabetes.

The event is open to the community.  Organizers of the event want to raise funds to donate to the ADA as well as to raise awareness within the community about the serious complications associated with diabetes.  Persons diagnosed with diabetes have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.  It is also the leading cause of kidney failure, nervous system disease and non-traumatic lower-limb amputations.  Local health agencies will also be onsite at Lomax-Hannon Jr College (725 South Conecuh Street, Greenville AL) to provide health screenings.

As a Type 1, insulin dependent diabetic; Co-Organizer LaKesha Womack wanted to bring awareness to the community about the seriousness of the disease and how it effects people of all ages.  She states, "Almost everyone that I have met with has a story of how diabetes has effected someone in their family.  We want everyone to come out to support this event and help us walk toward a cure."

The Community Walk will begin with registration at 7am, a Welcome Program to kick off the two mile walk from Lomax-Hannon to the Butler County Courthouse and back to Lomax-Hannon at 8am and an Awards Ceremony at noon.  Awards will be given for the most funds raised an individual, most funds raised by group and the group with the most registered walkers.

There is no cost to register for the walk.  Entertainment, health screenings and activities for the kids will be provided from 8am until noon.
