Which is better...? Exercising in a "fasted" or "fed" state?

Intermittent fasting has taken on new traction. A quick search on "IF" will lead you to many websites touting the benefits of fasting. For those trying to keep the weight off, intermittent fasting before working out may be just the key they need.
 
NORTHVILLE, Mich. - Oct. 30, 2013 - PRLog -- “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” So there I was in my 20s and 30s, waking up daily repulsed by the fact that I had better not skip the most important “meal of the day.” Who came up with that “rule”? I had always heard that fasting was “dangerous.” It could mess up your metabolism, it could waste muscle, you could die! The day I decided that my body would tell me when I was hungry was the most liberating day of my life. Even more freeing was the day I exercised in a “fasted state” and did not end up in a low-blood sugar-induced coma either. Many are waking up to the “never skip breakfast” mantra only to realize it’s not based in science. (Probably started by the cereal industry). Enter: intermittent fasting. Fasting has been around since the beginning of time and has been practiced by almost every culture in history. My first meal of the day is at lunch time when I am good and hungry after a great workout a few hours before.

Now if your goal is to gain muscle or you simply cannot handle working out in a fasted state then eat something light. But if your goal is to burn belly fat and maximize your fat burning hormones, exercising in a fasted state is optimal. Just keep your workouts short if it’s your fist time!
