Humanist Meditation Course for Skeptics

Humanist Learning Systems is offering an introductory course on meditation for Humanists, skeptics and other non-religious individuals interested in learning about meditation without supernaturalism.

TAMPA, Fla. - Nov. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Rick Heller, of the Humanist Mindfulness group at Harvard, is partnering with Humanist Learning Systems to offer an online course on Humanist Meditation. The 1 ½ hour course will walk participants through the history of the practice, what science tells us happens when we meditate and how this practice works as an essential natural and humanistic life skill.

At this point, there is little doubt that mindfulness can have beneficial effects, including helping people reduce stress and cultivate positive emotions. However, when presented by religious organizations, meditation often comes “packaged” with other beliefs that are not all that credible.

It is the aim of this course to filter out anything dubious and only present practices that are consistent with mainstream academic science and to provide the participant with the information they need to decide whether humanist or secular meditation is right for them.

Course instructor Rick Heller facilitates the Humanist Mindfulness Group, which is sponsored by the Humanist Community at Harvard University. His writing has appeared in Buddhadharma, Free Inquiry, UUWorld, Tikkun, the Boston Globe, and Lowell Sun.
