Nov. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- National award-winning children’s author and parenting expert Julia Cook, MS, is in Texas this week, speaking to education students and future teachers on topics such as Books that Make a Positive Difference and on Helping Kids Cope with Disasters and Violence.

December 14 marks the year anniversary of the terrible tragedy in Newtown, CT.  Over the last 18 months, we have been bombarded with other unthinkable events in Sparks, Nevada; Aurora, Colorada; and Boston.  With these and other horrifying headlines from the past year, we are having to talk to our children often about disasters and violence, but how do we find the right words?

These are hard conversations to have with your child, yet parenting expert and children's author Julia Cook offers tips that can be utilized at home or school. Please see http://www.juliacookonline.com/when-bad-things-happen/ where Julia freely gives expert-endorsed advice on the subject. She also has a book coming out later this year for parents to read with kids after a man-made or natural disaster - The Ant Hill Disaster, and she is currently in the process of working with ALICE Training Institute (alicetraining.com), a national crisis response organization, on another upcoming book -I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared - that teaches children survival skills in case there is an active shooter or violent intruder event on a school property.  The book has been vetted by experts and contains information that is age appropriate.

The power of Julia's books is her ability to translate complex subjects into kid language, and she works closely with subject matter experts like the above-mentioned organization to provide the most accurate and helpful information to parents, educators and children
