22 New gTLDs Added to Internet

Jan. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- ICANN is back from the Christmas break and wasting no time.  3 new TLDs were delegated to the Internet on January 2 and 19 TLDs were delegated on December 28. (Learn more about Top Level Domains at http://www.dotanything.co/toplvldomain.aspx )

After a TLD is delegated, each TLD will go through a ‘ramp-up’ phase during which the applicant gears up the technical infrastructure required to support the new TLD. If domains within the new TLD will be sold to the public, this ramp-up phase includes signing up Registrars. To date, all of the TLDs that have been delegated are unrestricted TLDs, which means that domain names within each of these new TLDs will be sold to the public.

A Top Level Domain (TLD) is the text to the right of the final dot in a domain name. For example, .Com is the most popular TLD today. In 2012, ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - held a historic application round inviting organizations from around the world to apply to create new TLDs. 1,930 applications for new TLDs were filed in ICANN's historic application round, which closed in 2012.(Visit http://www.dotanything.co/New-TLDs.aspx for a list of new TLD applicants.)

Since that time, each application for a new TLD has undergone a rigorous evaluation process which included evaluation of the string itself as well as the applicant's technical capacity and financial resources for operating a new TLD. It is expected that over 700 new TLDs will result from this application process, since many of the applied-for TLDs were duplicates of each other.
