The 2014 Jasper County Senator for a Day Speech Contest is Sponsored by the New River Auto Mall

The winners will receive a scholarship, participation in the Jasper County State House, and a special day of honor.

Feb. 4, 2014 - PRLog -- Jasper County residents are invited to attend the 7th annual Senator for a Day Speech Contest, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, in the Jasper County Legislative Delegation Chambers of the Mary Gordon Ellis Building. The county-wide contest, sponsored in part by the New River Auto Mall (http://www.newriverautomall.com/our-history/), will feature the finalists from preliminary competitions held at public and private schools, churches, and Boys and Girls Clubs across Jasper County.

The 2014 Senator for a Day Speech Contest finalists are Charrae Priester from Jasper County Boys and Girls Club, Ja’Len Beacher-Orr from Hardeeville/Ridgeland High School, and Authur Cartier from Thomas Heyward Academy.

The judges for this year’s contest include South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond; Director of Governmental Relations St. Joseph/Candler Tarry Mills Hodges; renowned author Rev. Joseph Darby; medical-legal expert witness and voice actor Dr. Alan Dinehart, DC; and author, speaker, and actress Mary Bright.

The judges will evaluate the contestants on their material, knowledge, language, projection, fluency, voice control, posture, appearance, and articulation.  Each contestant’s speech must be between seven and 10 minutes, and points will be deducted for each minute over or under the allotted time.

The winners of the Senator for a Day Speech Contest will receive a scholarship, in addition to being invited to participate in the April 9 session of the Jasper County State House and being honored with a special day of recognition on April 21.

The 2014 Senator for a Day Speech Contest will kick off with a reception at 5:30 p.m., where light refreshments will be provided, followed by the contest, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run to 7 p.m. The master of ceremonies for this year’s competition is Sen. Clementa C. Pinckney, who has represented the 45th District in the South Carolina Senate since 2000.

The site of the event is the Mary Gordon Ellis Building, which is located at 651 Grays Highway in Ridgeland, S.C.

The team at the New River Auto Mall is looking forward to a great turnout on Monday, Feb. 24, to celebrate these fine students as they compete the Senator for a Day Speech Contest, and they encourage family, friends, and supporters from Jasper County and throughout the Lowcountry area to attend.
