By: Inkwell Editorial One fairly new search engine optimization copywriter writer emailed me recently, saying: I find that the research [for writing articles] seems to take FORever though! It takes me about 3-4 hours to write a 350 word article-do you think that's "normal"? Factors that Determine How Quickly You Can Write an SEO Article There are many of them, but some of the biggies are how good of a researcher are you; do you know the niche/topic you're writing about; and how fast can you type (this is more important than many think). 4 Things I Do to Write Articles Faster Following are some strategies I use to speed up the writing process. 1. Create an Outline: Remember when you were taught to do this in grade school? Your teacher was right -- it's helpful. How? It makes the writing go faster because you know where you're going, ie, the points you want to make. 2. Save Often-Used Research Outlets: Piggybacking on the point above, when you write a lot on the same subject, save authority sites and sources you can come back to over and over again for helpful quotes, statistics, leads to other sources, etc. This way, you cut down on doing the same research over and over and over again. 3. Write Like You Talk: Most clients want relatable content these days. UNLESS you are writing content that requires a different tone, use a conversational style of writing. This makes the content flow more easily because you're using words you already know and don't have to go searching for "corporate speak," "legalese" or any other type of less commonly used language. And you'd be surprised at just how many words you know. Proof? According to the Lingholic article, How many words do I need to know? The 95/5 rule in language learning: ... the average active vocabulary of an adult English speaker is of around 20,000 words, with a passive one of around 40,000 words... an active vocabulary is comprised of words that you can recall and use in a sentence yourself. A passive vocabulary... is a vocabulary that you can recognize and know the definition of words, but are not able to use yourself. 4. Incorporate Keywords after Writing: Don't even think about them when you're writing. Go back and do this after you've completed the article. I find this so much easier to do than actively thinking about it as I'm composing the article. Conclusion I'm an avid article marketer. When I first started doing this type of internet marketing back in 2006, it would take me a couple of hours to write an article. Nowadays, I can write, edit and proofread a 400-500 word article in as little as 20-30 minutes. It's because I've progressed in my career and gained more knowledge about the things I write about regularly, eg, SEO writing, freelancing, self-publishing, etc. So the more experience you get as an SEO writer, the easier and quicker it will be for you to write cohesive, well-researched content that delivers value your clients can count on. But like everything, it takes practice.
