Sangam University - Talk on North East India History Culture by Prof Arupjyoti Saikia IIT Guwahati

The University Grants Commission – UGC has directed universities in India today to include the History and Unique Cultural Heritage of the North Eastern States of the country in the curriculum of courses in higher education institutions.
 
BHILWARA, India - May 11, 2014 - PRLog -- A delegation of North Eastern students recently had submitted a Memorandum to Honorable Prime Minister with regard to problems being faced by them while pursuing their academics in various institutions across the country.  One of the demands covered in the memorandum is the inclusion of the history and unique cultural heritage of North Eastern States in the national curriculum.

In this context, the Ministry of Human Resource Development – MHRD had also constituted a Task Force to promote educational opportunities and welfare of students from North Eastern Region. Highlighting the recommendations of the Task Force, UGC Deputy Secretary Dr Shakeel Ahmad in his letter D.O.No.6-1/2014 (CPP-II) dated 30 Apr 2014 has requested Vice-Chancellors of all universities to take steps as it may deem appropriate to implement the same.

In the light of the above, Sangam University Bhilwara contacted Prof Arupjyoti Saikia Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Guwahati which has recently been ranked among the top 100 of the World’s dynamic young universities by Times Higher Education (THE) Magazine to give a talk which he spontaneously agreed to do on 10 May 2014. Prof Arupjyoti whose Research InterestsincludeSocial & Environmental History of 19th and 20th century Assam holds a Bachelor degree from Gauhati University, History Masters from Jamia Milia Islamia, MPhil from JNU Delhi, PhD University of Delhi and a post doc from Yale University.

Addressing the students and faculty of Sangam University, Prof Arupjyoti Saikia gave an overview of Seven Sisters states of North East India – Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh emphasizing on the land, the people, social and cultural heritage, economy, festivals, places of interest etc. Prof BR Natarajan President – Vice Chancellor Sanagam University thanked Prof Arupjyothi for sparing his very valuable time despite his busy schedule for enlightening the audience on this very important topic which is of serious concern in India today.
