Two Books That Teach Children and Their Parents about Asthma and Diabetes

NEW YORK - Aug. 26, 2014 - PRLog -- Brian Wu is a MD/PhD in Physiology and Neurobiology, and the mind behind the Storybook Illustrated Guides project. This project represents a revolutionary approach in educating while entertaining, and it focuses on teaching children about serious health conditions and how to overcome them. The author started from the premise that ‘knowledge is power, and kids with health conditions deserve to be empowered’, and so he structured his books in such a way that they tell a compelling story while also offering basic information about the disorders and tips on how to treat them.

The first book in the series, ‘The Day Jake Lost His Breath’, is about asthma, and it was published in June 2014. It has an average rating of 4.8 stars on Amazon, with a young reader saying: ‘I am 8 years old and I think this book is great at helping kids with asthma, so they know what to do when their asthma gets worst, and can teach them to be careful of things that might trigger it off.’

Children will find it easy to relate to Jake, who is a little boy who loves playing outside. When he finds out that he has asthma, he is very upset because he thinks he will never enjoy running and playing with his friends like he used to. However, his parents and his doctor are very supportive, and they tell him everything he needs to know about his disease. With this knowledge, Jake is able to control his health problem and go back to enjoying life to the fullest. After he figures out what triggers his asthma, he is able to manage it well, which also helps his parents a lot. Knowing that their little Jake is responsible and takes good care of himself, they don’t have to worry very much.

‘The Day Jake Lost His Breath’ also has a Spanish edition which is available on Amazon.

The second book in the Storybook Illustrated Series deals with type 1 diabetes. ‘Estelle’s Winning Spirit’ is the empowering story of a little girl who has to fight one of the most terrible health conditions that can change someone’s life forever. In the first part of the book, children will learn about type 1 diabetes, what causes it, and how it can be treated and controlled. Then, they dive right into Estelle’s struggle with this disorder. While she is playing soccer, she begins to feel ill, and she is finally taken to the Emergency Room. Estelle and her parents are very sad when they find out that she is suffering from type 1 diabetes, but they don’t lose their hope. Estelle learns about her condition and how to take care of herself. She is a winner because she refuses to allow her disease to change her life.

Brian Wu’s books are a must-read for children who suffer from the health conditions covered in them, but also for those who have siblings or friends who are ill. Each book in the series shows them that they can overcome any obstacle and have a normal life, just like any other kid.
