By: NCNW (View Park) Honoree, Michael Weinstein, founder and president of the AIDS Health Foundation has been an activist since the age of 13 and has received a proclamation declaring him a “dynamic and inspirational leader” and “an unrelenting and tireless force in the struggle to stem the tide of HIV infection.” Today, Weinstein, as leader of the largest private provider of AIDS services in the U.S. travels the globe - as former Governor Gray Davis cited “a positive force for change” Ms. Sonia Hooper, honoree, has served as a conciliator for the Greater Watts and Los Angeles area linking the Nickerson Gardens Housing development with Medical organizations in Los Angeles. Ms. Hooper has also been instrumental in the development and opening of the new NCNW Inc. Wellness Station located in Pueblo Del Rio Housing Rev. Dr. Cecil L. “Chip” Murray Emeritus Pastor of First AME Church will be honored for his involvement in crisis issues facing his community. He was instrumental in securing job-training, homeowner loans, assisting families with affordable housing, and HIV/AIDS education and awareness. After retiring from his post as pastor of FAME he was appointed as the John R. Tansey Chair of Christian Ethics in the School of Religion at the University of Southern California. In addition, Rev. Murray was named a senior fellow of the Center for Religion and Civic Culture. He chairs the USC Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement (http://crcc.usc.edu/ The African American and Latino American people are the largest population in the community with the highest number of preventable health diseases. Yet, their access to adequate health care is limited by their lack of knowledge and/or resources. Each year their services nationally (NCNW) reach nearly 4 million women through 39 national affiliate organizations and more than 240 sections through a variety of activities. Additional participants in this year’s event will include community leaders, professionals in the fields of medicine, education, small businesses, corporations and those in sports and entertainment. NCNW’s historical significance continues to thrive on the principals of the founder, Mary McLeod Bethune. That is, to propel women and girls through increased knowledge, professional connections, collaborations and continuous development. NCNW principles focus on empowering women of color by creating and impacting meaningful educational programs for women and their families in communities who are challenged by lack of resources and finances.
