Follow on Google News | Deaths Caused Due to Lack of Health FacilitiesBy: GPC Medical Ltd. However, the coming into light the death of several young women in the district Bilaspur in the state of Chattisgarh opens a can of worms that actually goes unnoticed in most parts of India with regard to the health priorities offered to the poor of India. These women became victims of a coercive family planning programme carried out on them as they went through laparoscopic tubectomies to put a lid on the growing population of India. The death of these innocent women who leave behind not just a wailing family and very young motherless children but also a question mark on the various parameters of health and society norms that still exist in our country. It's a well known fact that vasectomy done on men is safer than tubectomy carried out on women to carry out population control. However, the statistics of last year show that 98 percent of the 4.2 million sterilization last year in India were tubectomy. It also brings out the fact that - India is the only country where tubectomy outnumbers vasectomies to carry out the family planning programme. This highlights the patriarchal norms that are still embedded in our system. It also suggests the vulnerability of the gullible women who get coerced easily to fulfill the numbers required to fill the government registers for the sterilization in the family planning program me. These deaths particularly send ripples down our spine when we actually touch the reality of the sanitary norms and the infected instruments that were used while doing these surgeries. The surgeons who carried out these record no of surgeries in a short span of time seemed to be in a hurry to create records rather than value precious lives. Abandoned hospitals with depleted furniture were used to perform surgeries that could be life threatening. Simple surgeries turned into massive death carrying exercise when the equipment used for these operations was infected and was not adequately sterilized. The instruments were probably being used one after the other without the mandatory sterilization and causing deaths. The aftercare needed after a surgery was probably not there and many women bled to death. We are surely a country of a booming population but if health priorities are not given its due share the poor are likely to produce more children because of the insecurity they carry regarding the health infrastructure and medical facilities offered to them. Such tragedies make the people lose faith in government carried out programmes and present a poor picture of the country. Health and Sanitation needs to have a top priority for a better living lifestyle for all citizens of India whether poor or rich.
