Follow on Google News | ![]() Gigastrand Announces Gigastrand OS 3.0Despite systemd controversy, Gigastrand commits to the development of a third version of its operating system.
Gigastrand is setting a release date of September 1, 2015 which is “an ambitious but achievable goal” according to Gigastrand Founder Josh Tordsen. “We are essentially starting from scratch on this version. The last time we did that, we took 16 months to get something worthy of release. So, a 9 month development is reasonable for what we want to do.” Mr. Tordsen also hinted at the possibility of a Gigastrand OS 4.0 in 2016. “Going forward, we are plan to do major releases on a 12-month development cycle with a potential 6-month minor update cycle.” So Gigastrand OS 4.0 is definitely in the cards however, even Mr. Tordsen admits that it “greatly depends on the development cycle of Debian and KDE” as to whether it will be worth a major release every 12 months. Recent politicking over systemd delayed the decision as to whether or not to move ahead with development of 3.0. In the end, the debate over systemd had less bearing on the decision to commit to development than other factors. “It’s something we will follow as we go forward,” says Tordsen, “but at this point, it doesn’t really factor into the development unless something drastic changes.” If the OS is not delayed, pre-orders will be available sometime in July 2015 at gigastrand.com. If history is any measure, pre-orders will be fulfilled before the OS is available for download as has been the way Gigastrand has handled software releases in the past. End
