th, 2015 –Sunni Markowitz, a former teacher and educational psychologist, is pursuing her passion and creating a secure and inspirational environment for future women leaders. Four years ago, she opened a camp and has created a unique summer “feminist playground”for girls starting at age seven.
This year, Camp Lantern Creek (http://camplanterncreek.com/
summer_camp.html)
will be expanding its programming and declared 2015 the year of the “Shero.”Although the camp includes traditional activities like theater, arts, and swimming, it also includes a mentorship program called “Bright Lights,”which brings accomplished women “sheroes”to camp to teach and inspire. Activities include learning how to balance a checkbook and change a flat tire.
Says Markowitz, “We think of Lantern Creek as a place where a girl can completely be herself. She’s not afraid to sing loud or play hard or get dirty. That kind of fun fearlessness is our greatest measure of success.”
Camp Lantern Creek has also compiled this short list of why an all-girls environment is healthy for many girls.
1. Self Confidence: Like women’s colleges, all-girls camps promote the same sense of security and self-confidence, creating markedly higher levels of participation and achievement (

2. Self-Esteem:
Girls’ self esteem takes a nose dive at age nine and girls start dieting as young as age ten. (
http://www.education.com/reference/article/ref_mirror_mir...) An environment where all girls are accepted and free of pressures of “popularity”
give them a positive view of their bodies and personal value.
3. Future Success: Studies show that women who were educated in all-female environments rise to astounding levels professionally.Of
BusinessWeek’s (
http://www.fastweb.com/college-search/articles/women-s-co...) list of the 50 women who are rising stars in corporate America, 30% received their undergraduate degrees from women’s colleges. More than 20% of the female members of Congress attended women’s colleges. Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/

reports that companies with the most women managers turn a “35% higher return on equity”.
Camp Lantern Creek also opens its facilities year-round for retreats, school groups, and corporate meetings. Their Mother/Daughter event (http://camplanterncreek.com/

from February 27
th to March 1stis expected to sell-out, as is their first-ever theater outing to see Mama Mia (http://camplanterncreek.com/

on April 18th. “These events and our family “house parties”are the best ways for a mother to sample the Lantern Creek spirit and philosophy,”
says Markowitz. “And once they see what goes on, the moms wish they could come to camp too! Perhaps I’ll open women’s camp one day!”
