By: NR Road Racing Dress as your favorite Super Hero and join the fight with one of Valley’s local families and their battle with aplastic anemia at the Heroes 5K! All levels of super heroes are welcome to participate in this super 5k. Walk, run or fly your way to the finish line. Let your superpowers shine bright at the Heroes 5k! Test your super speeds during this timed event. All super heroes will have the opportunity to be timed, however, it is not mandatory; runners/walkers are allowed to opt out of timing. Weather you are timed or not, we encourage all our participants to dress as their favorite superhero. While your superhero speed will be put to the test on the course, your super dance moves will be moving and a rocking at the super after party. Participants are encouraged to stay for the after party and get their photos taken for the newspaper headlines! The Heroes 5k will benefit a 9 year old boy named Riley. Riley has been recently diagnosed with aplastic anemia. This disease requires frequent trips to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which requires his family to travel over 100 miles one way. Unfortunately, some of these times have been via ambulance. Riley requires frequent blood transfusions and will soon be starting an aggressive treatment plan, similar to chemotherapy. Once this treatment plan begins, he will require hospital stays for a minimum of 4 days for each treatment. If unsuccessful, Riley may require a bone marrow transplant.
