April 1, 2015 - PRLog -- The penny has been a feature of Irish Coinage for over 1000 years from the time when the post Roman ‘Hibernia’, as Ireland was known, was invaded by the viking and Saxon hordes. The first pennies were hammered silver coins and these silver pennies were being minted during the reign of King John at mints in Waterford, Limerick and Dublin and carried Irish Designs.

The history of the Irish Coinage tended to mirror that of the British throughout the Middle Ages and throughout the Industrial Revolution. The first machine struck coins appeared around 1664 and the first Irish copper pennies were struck in 1805 and minted in Birmingham.

The Irish Free State came into being in December 1921. In 1926 the government of the newly founded Irish Free State formed a coinage committee to plan for a new Irish coinage. The chairman of the committee was the Irish poet William Butler Yeats. The first penny coins produced by the Irish Free State were bronze and were minted in 1928. These were replaced in 1940 by the Eire Penny. These coins were minted by the royal mint.

The coins in these pocket watches are those minted between 1928 and 1968.
