By: Galaxy Press As a feature of a radio program called the “Mail Buoy” on station KGBU, Hubbard offered advice for beginning writers and went one step further. As Hubbard opened the radio show, he struck a chord with his listeners when he opened by stating, “It has been my experience that almost everyone, at one period or another of his life as harbored a desire to write.” And with these words he initiated the “Golden Pen Award” writing contest to encourage listeners to write fiction. Prizes awarded by Hubbard, included an introduction to his New York publishing contacts. In 1983, as a continuation of a legacy of helping the aspiring artist and in recognition of the increasingly difficult path encountered between first manuscript and published work, particularly in an era in which publishers devote the lion’s share of their promotional budgets to a few household names, Hubbard “initiated a means for new and budding writers to have a chance for their creative efforts to be seen and acknowledged.” The event is open to all provided you RSVP. There will be no admittance without prior RSVP. For more information on the event and to see the awards ceremony online, go to www.writersofthefuture.com, www.twitter.com/ End
