By: Galaxy Press The performance was done as part of the annual Rose Festival, a tradition celebrating 108 years of promoting the arts, education and volunteerism. The Rose Festival Foundation also values environmental responsibility, diversity, patriotism and our historic and floral heritage. The fact of bringing the performance to Portland for the Festival was additionally significant considering that L. Ron Hubbard was also not a newcomer to Portland. In fact, he was in the harbor in 1943 where, as Lt. Hubbard, he assumed command of the PC-815 sub chaser on April 20 on her commissioning ceremony and in which ship he successfully engaged two enemy submarines ten miles off Cape Lookout. While some may know the name L. Ron Hubbard as the founder of Dianetics and Scientology, he was also one of America’s most prolific and popular writers during the 1930s and 1940s, publishing over 200 stories during that time, stories written in all popular genres, from science fiction and fantasy, to mystery and suspense, western and romance, and action and adventure. Galaxy Press, as the publisher of the fiction works of L. Ron Hubbard, completed a six-year program to re-publish over 150 short stories and novelettes written by Mr. Hubbard in the 1930s and 1940s, in the form of an 80-volume book and full-cast “movie of the mind” audio drama series.
