By: Springfield Tourism Commission Birthday bash Springfield marks one very special anniversary in June: The very first Dollar General store opened on June 1, 1955, in Springfield, after converting the space of Turner’s Department Store. Join the Birthday Bash on Saturday, June 13, to fete America’s favorite discount store and largest small-box retailer. There will be goody bags for the first 100 customers, 100 $10 gift cards given out and more at the current Springfield Dollar General. Summertime spark Springfield’ See F-15s, F-4 Phantoms, a B-1 Bomber, a Stealth Fighter Jet – even an SR-71 spy plane – when the world’s largest remote control jet show (http://www.vimeo.com/ Opening ceremonies take place at noon on Sat., July 11, followed by the Fighter Jet Showdown, a full-scale aerobatic jet show including high speed passes, 9G turns and simulated bomb runs. The Parade of Lights takes place Friday evening, a unique spectacle wherein the jets turn on their lights and travel in parade formation down the tarmac. An hour-long fireworks display follows the parade. Come to Springfield on Sunday, July 26, for the Manton Music Jam, a free everyone-is- On Friday, July 31, join the crowd of 1,000 or so for the 12th Annual African American Heritage Festival in downtown Springfield.
