Mr. Houston/Mr. North: Life, Death, and Making John Houston's Last Film

In the summer of 1987, Nat Segaloff was the only journalist—in fact, the only outsider—allowed onto the set of Mr. North, a delightfully unpretentious movie about a magical stranger who changes Newport society in the early twentieth century and turns the town upside-down.

The stars included Anthony Edwards (E.R.), Anjelica Huston (Prizzi’s Honor), Lauren Bacall (The Big Sleep), Harry Dean Stanton (Repo Man), Virginia Madsen (Sideways), Tammy Grimes (Broadway), and a host of other talents, including John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen). The director was Danny Huston, John’s son, but just as the cameras turned, John fell ill and was replaced by Robert Mitchum. There were daily reports on John Huston’s failing health, and the world wondered whether he would finally succumb after so many close calls with death.

Nat Segaloff reported on the production for The Boston Herald, but only some of the incidents. Now, after more than a quarter century, the full story can be told of the daily interactions of these famous egos struggling to finish their movie while being overshadowed by the one person who was no longer involved.
