Community activist and mayoral candidate Sy Smith to hold press conference on violence in Gary

GARY, Ind. - Oct. 15, 2015 - PRLog -- Gary In, October 15, 2015:  Sy Smith is a candidate for mayor of Gary, Indiana that conducts a Safety Patrol from the main bus and train portal at 4^th and Broadway all the way to 26^th and Broadway. On Friday Oct.16^th at 7:30 pm Smith will hold a press conference at Gary Metro station to shed light on the importance of community involvement. . “Safety is paramount to our people and since we are short on officers we doing our small part” said Smith.

Smith has invited the Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson, Gary Police Chief Larry McKinley and other community activists to demonstrate a non-political solidarity between the department and the citizens of Gary. Just last night there was an attempted robbery that was witnessed by patrol and an injured citizen that patrolers were able to get medical attention and were able to flag down police officers to identify suspect.  The patrol is conducted three to four evenings a week between 7 and 8 pm. In August of 2014 there had been 19 murders in Gary. This year, it's already up to 34. City officials said they can't turn around that trend by themselves.
