Follow on Google News | The New Yorker Publishes Feature on Lantern Books Author Jens SoeringJournalist Nathan Heller explores guilt, innocence, and memory in profile on controversial author of four Lantern Books titles.
By: Lantern Books The article, “Blood Ties,” is included in the magazine’s November 9 issue and available online now. In it, Heller tells the story of Soering, his college girlfriend Haysom, and the mysterious murder of her parents for which Soering has been incarcerated for almost thirty years. The article asks the question “All these years later, why has the case become a cause?” and discusses local and international political criminal justice issues related to a case that has involved US Attorney General Eric Holder; German President Angela Merkel; and three Virginia governors: Tim Kaine, Robert McDonnell and Terry McAuliffe. Martin Rowe, Lantern Books co-founder and publisher, says, “Jens has used his education, his writing skills, and his other privileges to throw light upon those who landed up in prison because they were poor, illiterate, mentally ill, or on drugs, as well as lifers who are now simply being warehoused because they are old and sick. That bipartisan support for sentencing and prison reforms now exists is a testament to the work of Jens and other activistsin shining a light on an issue we would rather not think about.” About Lantern Books Co-founded by Martin Rowe and Gene Gollogly in 1999, Lantern Books publishes general, non-fiction trade books on social justice, religion, family therapy, vegetarianism, animal advocacy. Lantern distributes a number of publishers, including Chiron Publications and the American Mental Health Foundation. End
