Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that can affect women after childbirth. Mothers with postpartum depression experience feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that may make it difficult for them to complete daily care activities for themselves or for others. Postpartum depression does not have a single cause, but likely results from a combination of physical and emotional factors. The Boston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. invites you to participate in an interactive Postpartum Depression discussion. This session will be led by Nyia Noel MD, MPH. Dr. Noel is an Obstetrician- Questions answered during this informative seminar will include: • What are the symptoms of postpartum depression? • How can a woman tell if she has postpartum depression? • How is postpartum depression different from the "baby blues" • Are some women more likely to experience postpartum depression? • How is postpartum depression treated? Participants will also have the opportunity to address questions, one on one with Dr. Noel. "By bringing our Mental Health across the Lifespan initiative to the Greater Boston community we shine a light on major issues affecting our community at every phase of the lifespan from - Bullying, Depression in College Students, Postpartum Depression and Successful Aging. Our goal is to bring awareness and help educate so that these issues are no longer taboo and those suffering can understand, and develop a plan of treatment, so they can lead full and healthy lives, " says Boston Alumnae Chapter President, Monique Carter. Two NIH Institutes, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) have partnered with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST), the largest African American women's organization in the world to create the Mental Health Across the Lifespan Initiative (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/ This event will be held at the Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center, located at 632 Blue Hill Avenue, Dorchester, MA 02121. Registration begins at 5:00pm. Participants will receive valuable resources and refreshments will be served.
